SC804 can be applied via both airless
spraying and brush/roller
application. The product is said to
offer impressive aesthetics as well as
a smooth matt finish.
In the development stage,
Nullifire worked with a key customer

Misting technology outperforms sprinklers
Cementitious
spray becomes
UL 2431
accredited
Promat FENDOLITE MII, a
cementitious spray used to protect
pipework, structures and vessels
from fire in the oil, gas and energy
industries, has become the first
product of its kind in the world to
demonstrate dependable long term
durability by receiving UL 2431
accreditation.
In meeting the stringent
requirements of the UL 2431
“Durability of Fire Resistive Coatings
and Materials” certification,
FENDOLITE MII has proven its
ability to retain its fire resistive
properties after being subjected to
various conditioning environments.
The tests to achieve UL 2431
accreditation included subjecting
samples to a wide range of
mechanical, physical and chemical
environmental conditions, which
applications would typically be
subjected to, before testing fire
resistance. This includes exposure to
air erosion, salt spray, high impacts,
vibration, humidity, UV and solvent
spray to reflect the intense operating
environments of oil, gas and energy
plants. Importantly, passing these
tests will become mandatory for UL
1709, the standard for “Rapid Rise
Fire Tests of Protection Materials for
Structural Steel”, listing in the near
future.
This success ensures that Promat
FENDOLITE MII now comes with
independent assurance on the long
term performance capabilities of this
established fire protection solution.

Comelit’s specialist fire detection
systems have been specified by
Avalon Technology Group at newly
introduced smaller gym facilities of a
leading low-cost leisure group in
Newark, Beverly and Lowestoft.
For each facility, the electrical
contractor appointed Avalon to
ensure the fire safety of the building
and occupants, specifying Comelit’s
Atena Easy single loop system.
Guy Stephens, director Avalon
Technology Group, said: “We needed
to select a system that was simple to
install and operational as quickly as
possible for the benefit of members
and staff. Comelit’s Atena Easy
Nullifire (tremco illbruck) has
developed a new intumescent
basecoat which will enhance its
water-based solutions offering.
SC804 Intumescent Basecoat was
designed to provide protection to
internal steelwork and should be
used within the C1 and C2
environments. The latest addition to
the SC800 series will provide
applicators with a product fit to give
optimised loadings for 90 minutes,
and up to 120 minutes fire
resistance. SC804 has been
formulated for on-site application,
with fast dry to handle times and a
recommended overcoat time of
Testing undertaken by fire
suppression specialist Plumis shows
that sprinklers can take up to a
minute longer than Automist to
activate in response to certain fires.
In the latest detailed analysis of
fires attended by fire and rescue
services, published by the Home
Office, figures show that cooking
appliances were by far the largest
ignition category for accidental
dwelling fires and non-fatal casualties
from accidental dwelling fires. They
accounted for 48 per cent of these
fires and 51 per cent of non-fatal
casualties 2018-19.
To understand how better to tackle
these types of incidents, Plumis
conducted tests at the Burn Hall at
the Fire Protection Association (FPA)
to see how different fire suppression
technologies measure up.
The results found that the
traditional sidewall sprinkler
activated after one minute and 49
seconds in comparison to the
Automist Smartscan, which took just
55 seconds. Once activated, the
Automist Smartscan was able to
successfully put the fire out in one
minute and eleven seconds. However,
it took the sprinkler one minute and
45 seconds.
High-pressure water mist, as used
in the Automist Smartscan, is said to
be highly effective in protecting
people and their homes against fires
caused by deep fat fryers and is
regarded as a more efficient and
environmentally friendly alternative
to sprinklers – using ten times less
water to achieve the same result.

dignified solution to existing
evacuation, access and egress issues.
One problem often encountered
during an emergency or in the
provision of access is lift
breakdowns. In fire scenarios, lifts
are considered unsafe and they often
cease to function altogether. How
