Protecting healthcare premises
FirePro is one of the world’s leading condensed aerosol fire suppression
products, having more independent approvals than its alternatives. It is a
globally recognised product installed in over 100 countries.
Condensed aerosol systems provide
many benefits over the more traditional
high pressure gas suppression systems.
This emerging technology is gaining
more pace in the fire suppression
market especially in the UK where
major organisations such as the NHS
reap the benefits associated with this
innovative product.
Ninewells Hospital in Dundee
recently underwent a major
refurbishment of the power supplies to
the hospital. This is involved 24 new
rooms that deal with standby power
generation and main electrical intake
and distribution. The use of FirePro
made the installation straight forward
and economical.
FirePro is safe to transport by road
and manually handle. It can be safely
stored in the boxes it is delivered in and
will work in temperatures as low as -
50°C to 100°C.
Safe protection
The lightweight FirePro condensed
aerosol generators are mounted directly
within the protected space at high level,
so there is no need to waste valuable
space for a cylinder store. The systems
are connected together electrically so
setting around other services is much
easier, as there is no heavy-duty pipe to
bend.
There is no need for pressure relief
venting, as no pressure spike created
when FirePro systems discharge but the
biggest benefit of FirePro is its ability to
protect rooms that would not be
sufficiently gas tight to be protected with
a gaseous fire suppression agent.
The low density of FirePro means
that it will stay suspended in the air
around it for several times longer than
the equivalent gaseous system. It can
also be configured to provide a second
shot or top up a few minutes after the
initial discharge. Independent testing
has shown that a room that would
normally have a retention time of 5
minutes for a HFC based fire
suppression agent would have a
retention time far in excess of 10
minutes when FirePro is used. With a
double shot system, a room of say
150m3 could have an equivalent leakage
area of 1.5m2. That’s the same as leaving
a door open.
Key advantages
This proved to be a beneficial advantage
in protecting the standby generators, as
there were many un-closable openings
which could be compensated for using a
combination of drop curtains and a
double shot system.
Using a Kentec Sigma XT Plus control
panel with its double extinguishing
output circuits made the installation of
the system very simple. The two circuits
were programmed to operate at the
required time interval. The two circuits
can still be reset should a hold button be
operated. This is just one of the many
examples where FirePro overcomes
problems that other systems struggle to
deal with.
It also has an independently certified
15-year operation life. It is not a
pressurised agent so this makes
hydrostatic testing unnecessary.
Pressurised cylinders should be tested
every 10 years, and again if they are ever
refilled.
Changes in design are easily
incorporated as FirePro is a fully
modular system, capable of protecting
the smallest of cabinets up to high bay
storage facilities. •
