Three ways to accelerate
efficient operations
Examine, report, repair
THE MANUFACTURING industry
faces a dual challenge – reducing
carbon emissions, while continuing
to meet demand and production
goals. Many UK manufacturers view
sustainability as an opportunity for
positive transformation, but see
digitisation as a longer-term solution,
so they are seeking ways to make a
difference today:
1. Reduce intensity
Production lines are intensive in
terms of equipment and energy
consumption. Identifying the right
product for a particular application
can maximise uptime and output,
extend equipment lifespan and
reduce waste. For example, Shell
Tellus S4 VE hydraulic oil offers up to
40,000 hours of oil life and can
deliver a decrease of up to 4.4% in
energy use.
2. Work together
A low-emissions future requires
industry collaboration, and lubricant
manufacturers must work to meet
evolving customer requirements.
Shell Lubricant Solutions recently
launched its portfolio of carbon-neutral
lubricants, designed to offset
the CO2e emissions of more than
200 million litres of advanced
synthetic lubricants and help
customers meet both their
sustainability and performance
goals.
3. Future thinking
It can be easier to spot opportunities
to transform operations with a fresh,
independent view. Talk to Shell
experts about identifying
opportunities to reduce waste, use
sustainably sourced raw materials
and packaging, and introduce
renewable energy and alternative
fuels.

Drives and
motors overview
A LIFECYCLE assessment service
provides a dynamic report of the
age and operating performance of
every ABB drive and motor across a
plant, helping save time and money
and improve profitability by
preventing lost production. The ABB
Ability Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
service provides an overview for
variable-speed drive (VSD) and
motor users of the health and
maintenance requirements of their
installed base.
It catalogues each VSD and motor
in the facility. Data is stored in a
dynamic report, which the customer
can access at any time to see the
age, location, criticality, operating
environment, service history and
part-replacement history of all
assets. This can help formulate
maintenance schedules, while
flagging up VSDs or motors that
need immediate attention, allowing
operators to project maintenance
budgets and manage costs.
The LCA Light service is for
generic fleet analysis; LCA Full
provides comprehensive analysis of
each individual asset. Visit:

AS THE body behind the national
standard of Thorough
Examinations, CFTS understands
that time is valuable. Its accredited
engineers are therefore trained and
equipped to remedy faults on site,
helping minimise downtime. During
a CFTS Thorough Examination the
lifting parts of a truck are examined
in accordance with LOLER, while
non-lifting parts, such as brakes and
steering, are examined in alignment
with PUWER. The engineer will also
conduct a 34-point inspection of
forklift attachments.
CFTS-accredited companies are
obliged under a stringent
procedural code to provide a
Report of Thorough Examination
complying fully with LOLER and
PUWER, a checklist specifying what
has been inspected and recording
any comments made, a certificate
to keep with the truck’s documents,
and a sticker (affixed to the truck) to
show day, month and year of the
next Thorough Examination. Visit

Composite tank-repair
solution
Hydratight saved a customer
from serious consequences by
repairing a chemical tank at
speed using a LOCTITE
Composite Repair System.
Large holes and pitting marks
were discovered in the roof of a
chemical tank during routine
inspection. As a welded repair
was unsuitable, Hydratight
proposed the LOCTITE
Composite Repair System, a
resin-based com posite material
reinforced with fibres.
ISO/TS24817 and DNV GL
certified, it is
suitable for
repair of non
through-wall
and through-wall
defects,
covering
repair classes 1
– 3. When
used on steel
pipes, it can
increase
service life by
up to 20 years.
Hydratight
technicians, in collaboration
with Henkel engineers, used a
digital calculation tool to
determine an effective
approach. LOCTITE EA 3478
Superior Metal was applied as a
defect filler and held in place by
multiple layers of LOCTITE
composite material, topped by
a sprayable ceramic coating.

Thorough Examination digitised
PARTNERING WITH Service Geeni,
CFTS has digitised and automated
the Thorough Examination process,
making it streamlined and efficient
and helping members and
customers further improve safety
levels across the industry.
Conversations between CFTS and its
members showed that many were
struggling with all the paperwork
Thorough Examination entails.
Service Geeni provides specialist
service management software that
uses mobile technology and enables
efficiency and service excellence.
Working closely with CFTS, it
developed a bespoke application
that gives engineers the information,
examination checklists and forms
they need in the field, on any device.
Engineers can complete the
required details on the job with pre-populated
forms, saving time,
removing admin and providing clear
information for quoting for any extra
work. Automation has removed
costly delays, enabling productivity
to increase and admin to be
reduced.
