Energy-efficient
synchronous
motors
WITH ITS new IE5+
synchronous motor, NORD
Drivesystems is reported to be
setting new standards for those
seeking an energy-efficient,
cost-conscious and
environmentally friendly
solution. The new motor is also
available in ventilated or
smooth versions up to a power
of 4.0 kW. If required, the
motors are provided with a very
smooth surface or the nsd tupH
surface treatment.
The energy-efficient IE5+
permanent magnet
synchronous motors’ high
efficiency and wide torque
range make them particularly
suitable for economic operation
in the partial load range. NORD
anticipates interest from the
intralogistics sector and
hygiene-sensitive applications in
food and pharmaceutical
industries.
Last year, the compact IE5+
motor was introduced in size 71;
this is now joined by size 90 for
power ranges from 1.1 to 4.0 kW
with a continuous torque of 6.8
to 18.2 Nm. Direct motor
attachments as well as NEMA
and IEC motor attachments are
available. Rotary encoder and
mechanical-brake integration is
available on request.
Because the constant torque
provides a targeted reduction of
variants over a wide speed
range, administrative expenses
can be minimised and
manufacturing, logistics,
storage and service processes
can be streamlined. The
investment pays for itself within
a short time, says NORD.

Solar-energy system set to cut costs
EMBRACING THE value of solar
technology, wire products
manufacturer
William Hughes
is forecast to
save about
£35,000 in
energy costs
and reduce
carbon
emissions by
100 t per year
following installation of an optimised
SolarEdge PV system at its
Stalbridge, Dorset headquarters.
The 400 kW installation is expected
to deliver electricity at a levelised
cost of 3.2p/kWh compared with the
9p/kWh paid on average by UK
manufacturers, achieving payback in
3.8 years and saving £1.4 m over the
system’s lifetime (factoring in
inflation).
Green-energy
specialist
CleanEarth helped
William Hughes
secure £100,000
in grant funding
towards the cost
of the project from
Low Dorset
Carbon. The scope of the install
includes 1,000 solar modules using
SolarEdge inverters with panel-level
monitoring – making it the largest
single-site solar array that Low
Carbon Dorset has supported.

INTRODUCED BY ABB, HoverGuard
is said to be the world’s fastest, most
sensitive drone-based gas-leak
detection and greenhouse gas-measuring
system. Designed to
transform safety and environmental
measurement capabilities for
operators of millions of kilometres of
pipelines traversing the globe,
HoverGuard is the latest addition to
the ABB Ability Mobile Gas Leak
Detection System.
It detects, quantifies and maps
leaks up to 100 m from natural gas-distribution
and transmission
pipelines, gathering lines, storage
facilities and other potential sources,
and automatically generates
comprehensive digital reports that
can be shared minutes after a
survey. The cloud-connected, multi-gas
solution can quantify methane,
carbon dioxide and water vapour
continuously while flying.
Cavity-enhanced laser-absorption
spectroscopy is said to detect
methane with a sensitivity more
than 1000 times higher and more
than 10 times faster than
conventional leak-detection tools.

Speed and
sensitivity
WITH THE arrival of summer and
the ongoing threat of COVID
disruption, there is a requirement
for cooling that can run effectively
alongside ventilation systems.
EcoCooling provides a single-box
solution that works as part of a
mechanical ventilation system to
keep buildings cool for people and
products. In addition to the safety
benefits, an EcoCooling system
uses 90% less electricity than
refrigeration-based air-conditioning,
making it a cost-effective, green
solution.
Evaporative cooling can achieve
supply temperatures below 25°C,
even during the hottest days of
summer, with no need for
mechanical refrigeration. A
standard unit costs less than 14p
per hour to run, which is
considerably less than an air-conditioning
alternative.
Evaporative cooling is suited to
industrial settings, as it is designed
Moving to
electric
for cooling large spaces and can
effectively blanket-cool whole
buildings or spot-cool specific areas.

Evaporative cooling for safety and savings
A MULTI-MILLION-pound, long-term
investment programme is
underway at Essentra
Components to upgrade the
company’s hydraulic injection-moulding
machine portfolio to
electric by the end of 2031. The
company is working with a few key
equipment suppliers with global
support networks to replace 180
machines that have been operating
for 15-years or more. The
replacement machines will be both
all-electric and hybrid-electric, the
latter using Vireo servo drive
technologies.
The transition will result in an
estimated 33% reduction in energy
consumed, cycle-to-cycle, and a 25%
uplift in cycle-time gain, tool-to-tool.
The predicted process and
productivity improvements will
effectively enable three electric
machines to do the work of four
hydraulic models, reducing the
overall footprint. Increased capacity
is complemented by the
guaranteed repeatability electric
machines can deliver.
