WHEN A Floating Production
Storage and Offloading vessel
experienced equipment issues,
Quartzelec helped rectify the
problem and identified and
addressed the root cause.
Quartzelec’s inspection of a
67 kW 690 V Ex de, cage induction
motor identified substantial damage,
including failure of the DE and NDE
bearings, multiple ATEX defects, a
melted cooling fan due to bearing
failure, core damage to stator and
rotor, and significant winding
damage. It immediately sourced and
fitted an identical replacement
machine into the casing.
Lack of regular maintenance
resulted from motor greasing points
being impossible to reach when the
machine was in service. Quartzelec
worked with the client and OEM,
and accessible greasing facilities
have now been installed.
A condition-monitoring
programme would have limited or
even avoided such extensive
damage, costs and downtime.

Nitrogen
generators aid
research
MANY PROJECTS have been
completed by Thorite for UK
universities, including
installation of a series of
compressor systems and
nitrogen generators for a new
lab at the University of
Liverpool. The Liverpool
installation is based on a Parker
NITROSource system consisting
of three N2-80PALY nitrogen
generators in a two on-duty,
one standby configuration. This
provides outputs of up to
1003/h of nitrogen at 100 ppm.
Each generator is supported by
a Parker OFAS pre-treatment
package.
Thorite also supplied and
installed three HPC Kaeser
CSD(X) Series rotary screw
compressors. These are
individually controlled by
Kaeser SIGMA Air Manager 4.0
units, which monitor the
compressed-air supply from
each compressor.
The modular Parker
NITROSource system saves
around 25% in compressed-air
use. The HPC CSD
compressor’s SIGMA control
enables performance to be
matched precisely to actual air
demand, giving additional
energy savings.
